I picked up this Remington 700 SPS 7mm Remington Magnum awhile back. I originally got it with plans of building a ELR/ULR shooter like Dane’s 7mm SAUM but after a period of indecisiveness I decided to see what I can do with a bone stock rifle.
Right now the rifle is as it came from the factory. Last night Dane and I mounted the base and torqued everything to spec. The trigger hasn’t been touched, I’m not sure what the break weight is but compared to my match rifle its very, very HEAVY! I added a Eagle stock pack to improve the cheek weld.
Here is what we’re working with;
Remington 700 SPS 7mm Remington Magnum
Nightforce 25 MOA base
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56mm NP-R1
Badger Ordnance 30mm low rings
Eagle stock pack
Str8Laced Gun Gear shooting bag
Harris 6″-9″ Bi-pod
US Optics gun level
Hornady Superformance 162 gr. SST
Today we had a couple of things to test and tinker with so we headed out, on the way we stopped by Bass Pro Shops and grabbed a box of rounds. The ammo came to $38.99 + tax. We were going back and forth between the Hornady stuff and good old Remington Core lock’s @ $28.99 + tax. We chose the Superformance ammo because the 162 gr. SST is probably as close to the 162 A-Max as I was going to find with factory loaded ammo. I will be messing with hand loading for the rifle later and will be using the 162 A-Max because I think it will do well in the 1-9.25″ twist barrel.
On the first outting I think the rifle did really well. I did a quick poor man’s bore sight after mounting the scope and torque’ing it to spec. My first round hit paper, Dane called out the correction to me and I dialed it. This group was my next 5 rounds. I think the rifle can do 1 MOA. The last round I fired was the one that hit center of the bull’s eye. I felt I yanked that shot but I didn’t want to post a “cherry picked” group so I left it at that. For a factory rifle that I slapped a scope on out in the desert and stuffed with factory ammo I’m pretty happy.
Now that I have a base line I will being tinkering with the rifle. I will keep you guys updated on how it comes a long. After different improvements I will shoot another 5 round group with the rifle to see if it makes a difference. I will also compare the Superformance stuff vs. hand loads.
Shot this 5 round group @ 100 yards on 12/30/2012 at Desert Sportsmen. Dane and I cut 3″ off the barrel, free floated it and replaced the trigger with a externally adjustable Remington X-Mark Pro. We shot the last of the Hornady Superformance ammo and may pick up another box before I start working on hand loads for it.
